and Antarctica to the south. The fertile and fruitful strip is climatically
perfect for growing grapes and its remoteness has prevented the arrival of the
deadly Phylloxera louse. Compared with Argentina, the vineyards of Chile are
lower-lying and their wines earthier. Many vineyards are planted with red and
white grapes and the resulting profusion of styles has created a reputation for
reliability rather than creativity. The last few years has seen a growing
understanding of regional differences within Chile and the quality and interest
of the wine it produces seems to improve with every vintage.
